New second hand car breaking down - HELP

Postby sk3lph » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:04 pm

Hi everyone, looking for some much needed advice.

Bought a great looking Discovery TD5 ES 5 weeks ago and we got it for towing a horse trailer.

It has developed a problem outlined below and the dealer is washing his hands of it so we're looking to take it to a good garage in the Lancashire area that will hopefully make it reliable again.

Problem seems to only happen when the car is being used to tow the horse and has happened twice now. The engine warning light will illuminate and the S and M symbols also illuminate, the engine will experience loss of power, splutter and eventually stall. If the engine is turned off and then started again the car would manage about fifty yards before the same problem would happen again.

The RAC were called out the first time it happened and the following fault codes were obtained

3141 (net search points to throttle pedal potentiometer)
3007
3031
3022
3023
3030

The RAC agent was able to get the warning light to illuminate with high revs from the engine whilst the car is stationary in neutral. It was also noticed that the throttle response was almost nil once the warning light came on.

Can someone recommend a good garage in the Lancashire, Preston area that can restore our faith in this car? Anyone know what the codes mean?

Any help or advide would be much appreciated.

There will be members along in the next 24hrs or so who can put you in the right direction, but i dont understand how the dealer thinks he can wash his hands of it. If you were a member it would help to let him kindly know there is a few thousand members currently behind you and ultimatly spreading the doom and gloom about his dealership. Who is the dealer and where are they?????? we dont want anybody from this club (or others) to be going there.

I cannot help you with the codes, but i seriously wouldn't suggest just giving up on the dealer you bought it from. I had a massive ordeal not long ago which resulted in me selling my previous disco due to it being so bad and no dealer support. Unfortunately i didn't take it any further for certain reasons, but if you are willing to take the car back to them to have the work done then i can't see that being unreasonable at all.

Contact the trading standards in your area, they will provide you with a letter to send to the dealer which highlights their legal obligation to fix the problem for you. if you financed it they will also give you a letter to send to your finance company who may (i stress may0 also have some obligation.

Dont whatever you do get it fixed elsewhere and then chase them for the cost, that can be very difficult. But the dealer does have the responsibility for fixing it.

as higlighted tradeing standard will be able to tell you your right, unless it was bout in a "sold as seen" then u have trading rights,

also if its a dealer ship, park it out side with stickers all over with the problems on and refuse to remove it untill they fix it, (make sure it is parked legaliy or they can have it removed)

Thanks for the responses.

The main issue is that the car had a months warranty which has now expired, as it has taken this long for the problem to establish itself. We have towed three times with it in the last month and its the second and third time towing that it has broken down. The dealer therefore, will only accept it back as part of a trade in - meaning that we are going to lose out by a lot if we do this. To buy the discovery we traded in our old Pajero to make up the difference which the Dealer is ignoring in the cost (despite the fact that he has already sold it) and only including the money we paid in the equation, so even if we were to swap the car for a car of the same value we would still have to pay another £1500.

We have been in touch with trading standards and the dealer is aparently obliged to swap it like for like, he has said he doesn't care what Trading Standards says, as its now outside of warranty if we want to swap it it'll cost another £1500. So we'll have a big battle on our hands if we want to pursue this when we just wanted a reliable car for towing. I think generally people tend to sell or trade in cars when they start becoming a liability so we're accepting that we'll need to spend some money on it to put it right. Clearly making a profit is much more important to this dealer than customer satisfaction.

The dealer is this one - http://www.fortonmotors.co.uk if you want to make your members wary of the "excellent customer service" that's mentioned on the web site.

We are going to take the car here - http://www.lakeland.landrover.co.uk/ for it to have a good going over to hopefully resolve the issue - ideally we need a guarantee that the problem is fixed as the prospect of breaking down on the motorway with a horse is not a good one.

So is this a good garage? Anyone help with the error codes? If we stick with this car I join up too as this looks like a good community to become a part of.

These people sound exactly like the sort i was dealing with. If you have the time spare follow it up and hopefully you will get some results. I'll admit that yes i did give up with my last one, but i did have valid reasons to do so.

Such a shame as it puts a cloud over the car and any future purchases.

From what I've heard they are good so we are initially prepared to pay a bit more if they can resolve the problem.

Lakeland have an excellent reputation on the Disco3.co.uk site, although most people there spend a lot of money on nearly new or new cars, so the cost is proportionately less, They ahve also won several LR customer service awards, as voted for by the punters, not the management.

But they are a main dealer so will be a bit more than an independent.

3141 Driver Demand Fault
3030 air flow high

I can't find a good list of fault codes, so I think the first thing is to get the diagnostics done with actual words in the report. If you have a member with a Nanocom nearby they might be able to help.

P3030 air flow high might be related. This could be as simple as a faulty throttle sensor throwing things out and the ECU not knowing what should be happening.

Stick with trading standards. the seller may well say sod them, but when it goes to court you will have done all the right things to prevent yourself from being out of pocket

We took the car today to Lakeland and got 20 miles into the journey before the car broke down so it completed its trip on the back of a flat bed truck. I'll post here on what they find although it could be a while as they are booked solid for the next fortnight.

Thanks for the replies - unfortunately we've not got the time or the energy to fight this case - we just need a reliable car.

I'm also going to send the dealer an email making him aware of this thread and see if he is prepared to offer some good will.

A good reputation can take years to build.

With modern technology a bad reputation takes seconds.
