90th Anniversary of 150mph Land Speed Record at Pendine

Post by Bluestone Wanderer » Wed Jun 10, 2015 7:30 pm

On 21st July there will be a celebration of the 90th anniversary of the day that Sir Malcolm Campbell reached 150mph in a Sunbeam -Bluebird. The actual car will be driven on Pendine beach by Sir Malcolm's grandson Don Wales. As we in the West Wales section have done before for Don, we have been asked if we will provide our assistance for the day. As usual we will be doing such tasks as running the press on the beach, ensuring the public are safe and setting up and dismantling the running area for the run the Sunbeam will be doing.

If anyone is on holiday in the South Wales area on 21st July and would like to assist us on the day please get in touch and we can give you more details.

Well, lots of coverage for the event on national news today. Here's our traditional end of day team photo. Bluebird taking pride of place although the driver Malcolm Campbell's grandson Don Wales was missing - he was off having a pee! Although the photo does include the chap in the blue jumper who was responsible for the rebuilding of the car.

Restored by our workshop team at Beaulieu led by Ian 'Stan' Stanfield. A long and difficult job to get it going again. Previously run by a group who ignored the advice that oilways needed cleaning out with result that a piston and rod made a dash for freedom through the crankcase. Its a modified aircraft engine v16 in 4 blocks of 4. I was holding the fire extinguisher when we first started it up last year which was very dramatic with much popping and flames. We cannot run it at speed as the original gearbox went missing long ago so we have a substitute fitted from a light commercial vehicle which will not stand the 350hp.
